What is the naturalization process like in the United States?

In one of our posts last week, we discussed some of the criteria to become a naturalized citizen of the United States. This week, we are going to expand some on what the process entails so that our readers in Texas know what to expect during the process.

What forms do I have to fill out?

You need to fill out Form N-400, Application for Naturalization if you want to become a naturalized citizen. When you submit this form, you will be given an appointment for biometrics. This is when your fingerprints will be taken. After that, you will have to go to an interview. You will have to wait on the decision to come in from USCIS. If you are approved, you will have to take the Oath of Allegiance. After that, you will be responsible for knowing your responsibilities and rights as a citizen.

What is the Naturalization Test?

When you go into the interview, you will have to take a test unless you qualify for an exemption. The test helps to determine if you know how to speak, read and write English in an acceptable manner. There is also a civics test that you will have to take. There are two opportunities per application to take the tests. If you fail them, you will get to retest 60 to 90 days after that interview.

The process for becoming a naturalized citizen is very involved. Those who want to become a naturalized citizen should make sure they understand all aspects of the process to ensure they are doing what they must do during the process.
